Re: Travelling? http://www.hpac.ca/pub/?pid=83

Update...

Travel Medical Insurance Tips Cont…

1. Ensure that you have, with you, the (toll free?) overseas phone number by which you contact your Work Insurance Plan Provider / Travel Insurance Provider, and that all those accompanying you know where to find such.

2. Check into what dollar figure for (prior approved) medical expenses is included as perks with your Credit Card.
- It can sometimes take time for any travel medical coverage provider's payment scheme to kick into gear.

Example: $20,000 fatality repatriation pre-pay requirement.
See: http://www.paraglidingforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=70164

- If your Credit Card does not include Travel Medical Insurance, upgrade it to a plan that does.

3. Be aware that you may be required to pay in advance yourself - at least to begin with - and later claim back your expenses from the insurance provider.
- so if you have a low credit $ limit on your Credit Card, phone in to Jack it WAY up before you go.

4. For Foreign Resident AAA Members visiting Canada:
You can, if you drop in immediately, purchase CAA "Visitors to Canada Travel Medical Insurance" valid in the province you purchase it in, and all across Canada.
(Terms and conditions vary in each province.)
BCAA (British Columbia) covers recreational Hang Gliding and Paragliding, but not Commercial (Instruction) or Racing. (Competitions.)

5. For those of us in Canada…
CAA Travel Medical Insurance is very inexpensive and very good for out of province and / or out of country coverage for Hang Gliding and Paragliding.
- I highly recommend it… whether or not you have a private work plan. Example: BCAA Travel Medical Insurance
(Automobile Association Members traveling through Canada can purchase it at any CAA office.) (Note that it is only valid out of the province you bought it in AND the province you live in.)

Again, BCAA (British Columbia) covers recreational Hang Gliding and Paragliding, but not Commercial (Instruction) or Racing. (Competitions.)
(Terms and conditions vary in each province.)

Bottom Line Punch Line:
For those of you that shrug at the thought of Travel Medical Insurance - this is a bill for just six nights in a US Hospital.

HPAC 3d Party Insurance is Valid World Wide. Info is on the HPAC Insurance Section of our website.
Good idea to print a copy of the Insurance (Binder Cover at least) posted there.

UPDATE:

Mark Forbes, USHPA Treasurer and Insurance Chairman is answering USHPA Insurance related questions here.
FYI: - the entire thread starts HERE.

Cont... From: "Mark G. Forbes" USHPA Treasurer and Insurance Chairman
Sent: Wednesday, 19 December, 2012 11:01:43 PM

1. USHPA insurance is valid Worldwide, for vacation trips, for USA Resident Citizens whilst flying abroad
- as long as claims are filed in a court of US jurisdiction.
- This clause is Not valid for USHPA members permanently resident outside of the coverage area.

2. USHPA Full or Temporary Membership purchased by Foreign Resident Pilots (ie Canadians) is valid in USHPA coverage areas which include the US, Puerto Rico, Canada, but NOT Mexico.

- Canadian pilots are covered, but our coverage isn't an exact match for the HPAC policy.
Particularly, you have landowner coverage by default, and ours is by specific named insured.
- Limits may be different as well... I haven't reviewed the HPAC policy lately.

Can the HPAC source Travel Medical Insurance that is valid for Hang Gliding and Paragliding Competition "racing"?
That is excluded now everywhere I have asked. (It could become an additional revenue stream for our Insurance Provider or...)

And / or for commercial flying such as prize events and / or Instructors teaching out of Country / out of Province?

See related thread at:
http://www.paraglidingforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=53275

On Nov 25, 2015 I checked with 2 offices of the CAA in Calgary regarding travel insurance. Both offices said that PG was excluded in their coverage. Does anyone know of an insurance provider that covers PG? Tim Keogan

Message forwarded from BCAA: (repeated from above.)

AAA Members ma buy "Out of Province Resident" or "Foreign Resident' Travel Medical Insurance from BCAA at one of their offices on your way through British Columbia.
So schedule a stopover in British Columbia, BCAA provides Travel Medical Insurance that includes HG & PG (excluding professional paid competitors) to all CAA members.
It is not valid in your province of residence or in British Columbia. You have to physically drop into one of their Branch offices and do it in person.
It is NOT sold On-Line (or by phone, mail or email) to out of province residents.

Thanks for the reply Fred. I happen to be in BC now so I will look in to it. BTW I think that Sun Life travel insurance does not exclude PG for recreation. Regards

MessagePosté le: Ven Nov 25, 2016 09:21 am    Sujet du message: Travel Insurance that includes aerial sports? Répondre en citant

Hi ALL,

I am looking for Insurance for a trip to Australia winter 2017
Just want to let you know that 2x of the options listed in this thread are currently No-GO.

1. CAA does not include HG PG Hot Air Ballooning or ANY aerial sports that involve you as pilot in command (PIC).
They also counted out Tandems with an instructor etc. noting that the PIC instructor have health issues and cause you
to become PIC (??) Scuba Diving is covered. Bungee Jumping OK

2. World Nomads - does not cover HG or Paragliding PIC or Tandems - it took quite a bit of poking around
to discover this. They actually represent them selves on the internet as the Insurance Company for travelers who like extreme
action BUT, they have a massive fine-print page which states they do not cover various things that are high-risk.

These were my 1st choices & I struck out with both.

Does anyone have updates for valid companies in 2016/2017?

Thanks in advance!

Clive Beddall
