The American Cup - Historical Research Project.
(Once completed, reference to "Historical Research Project" will be deleted, leaving this as the thread for upcoming events over the next few decades.)
Tracy Knauss of Chattanooga Tn USA created the Hang Gliding American Cup event and trophy.
See: http://www.chattanoogan.com/2006/2/20/80661/Chattanoogan-Multi-Facted-Tracy-Knauss.aspx
Tracy Knauss The Photo Doctor (423.629.5378) Email: tracy at ultralightflying dot com (Thanks goes out to michaelb51 for this!)
Tracy Knauss was famous as publisher of Glider Rider magazine (Predecessor to the USHPA Magazine.)
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_hang_gliding
The American Cup Trophy, resides in the UK, (in Gordon Rigg's house)
The British were the last "CIVL Cat 1" American Continentals Hang Gliding Championships National winning team.
The American Cup Rules include that the Winning National Team's National Association is to be the next event's Host Nation.
Obviously, I am posting this in the hopes that more American Continentals Cat 1 Hang Gliding Championships will result from this.
Thanks for this to Gordon Rigg. (Who promised an even better picture.)
-Who wants the information needed to put the plaques on the Trophy.

As I said, the BHPA and http://bhgc.wikidot.com/ would therefore be the host of the next event.
I met with the owner of Fairmont Hot Springs Resort and he confirmed interest in allowing us to host the event there again.
Note: the site is NOT open to free flying. The launch is only available for Major Competitions and Pre-Qualifier Events.
Contact info will be edited in here later. Stay tuned.
The Fairmont Airport (Columbia Airport Society) (also owned outright by Fairmont Hot Springs Resort) allows Hang Gliders to land there in Emergency Situations ONLY.
At the present time they are unwilling to negotiate access to the site as main LZ for any event there.
The Municipality of Canal Flats ± 15 Km south, has agreed to allow us to use their airport at any time for free flying and as goal for out and return Event Tasks that head south down the Columbia Valley Trench. - and include an invitation to camp / Park RV's there.

the American cup was held at Mount Swansea in invermere, not at Fairmont Hot Springs. you must be thinking of the 1984 BC provincial championship, which was held at the latter location. I was the alternate team member in the 1986 competition, so my memory is clear on this point. |
